Constructing
a climbing wall |
Width : give it greater importance, for
it determines the largest number of participants possible : 1.20
m (4') to 1.50 m (5') wide = one route for a pair climber/belayer-
ideally 16 routes
Configuration : plan an incline and an
overhang (1.20 m or 4' to 3.00 m or 10') for varsity sports events,
and sports associations
S lab for beginners not necessary, rather plan a vertical surface
A ll routes must be easily watched by the teacher/instructor
Average height : 7 m to 9 m (23' to 30')
Number of protruding holds : 5 / sq. m
(5 / 10 sq. ft)
Support : whether the available support
is a concrete wall, a breeze block wall, a steel frame, timber columns
or other, there is always a possibility to adapt a corresponding
climbing wall support. The option of self-standing climbing wall
supports is also a solution
Crash area : indoors = fold-away crash
mats / outdoors = gravel base 30 cm (1') deep
Clearance zone : 3 m (10') in front of
the largest overhang
Safety : plan belay anchor systems on
the floor, 2.50 m (8') in front of the wall (anchoring case with
removable cap) to allow secure belaying for beginners, draw a red
line at a 3 m (10') height to indicate the limit of climbing without
rope belaying (traversing mainly), in multi sport halls, plan a
separation net
Other fittings / comfort items : lighting
= minimal intensity of 300 lux even / heating and ventilation =
temperature 16°C (60°F) to 18°C (65°F), the hot
air must not accumulate on top of the wall

Pyramide 's recommendation |
Plan a curtain to separate the climbing wall
area from the other courts (preferably non see-through). Do not
forget the corresponding climbing equipment
